The Banyan Tree
Modern, sophisticated, and subtly expressive with a global influence.
These are the hallmarks of The Banyan Tree, an interior styling and design boutique on Toorak Road in Burwood Village. It’s what’s kept owner and head interior stylist Melinda busy for over two decades, along with her team of fellow design enthusiasts. On any given day inside their Camberwell boutique, you’ll find Melinda and her team locating meaningful design to help customers express who they are and add value to their emotional spaces. And of course, there’s husband Simon, who works alongside as a business partner and hands-on jack-of-all-trades.
Melinda and Simon first crossed paths at just 16 years of age during high school. The couple married at 23, and have worked together ever since. Braiding their relationship with their mutual interest in furniture, home wares and gardens, the couple has tapped into their ability to help others define their homes.
But as any family knows, form is meaningless without function.
“We love good design and functionality, and work hard to source products that will actually suit a person’s home. Our goal is to help customers make good decisions on their bigger staple pieces, and then bring in soft furnishings and accessories for finishing touches,” says Melinda.
Drawing on their time spent working in the travel industry, Melinda and Simon are inspired by Scandinavian design, clean lines, light shades and blending form with purpose.
“We specialise in finding what’s practical for families and couples,” explains Melinda. “What looks good in one home might not in another home of a different size, so we always try to think of the long-term and what suits their lifestyle best.
By focusing on the individual with a tailored design solution, Melinda and Simon have grown the business based on their exceptional customer service and solutions-based approach.
“Being a family-based business, we’re very personable and understand that functional design isn’t a one-size-fits all. What sets us aside is that we’ll go the extra mile. That’s why we have such a high return rate of customers.”
It’s true – the boutique has gathered a huge following in its 23 years. On any given day, the store is filled with customers after Melinda’s sage design advice. Working 7 days a week, she and Simon live and breathe interior decorating.
“One of our proudest moments was helping sell a five-bedroom home recently. It goes to show that it really is all about the little details.”
